About The Academy
The Academy was opened following the closure of the Derby Playhouse in 2007. Neale, formally the Director of Learning at the Playhouse, recognised the need for a high standard of actor training in the East Midlands. Membership was initially restricted to previous members of the Playhouse Community and Youth Theatre groups, but interest and demand was so high that membership of the Academy was opened up. A number of current members were part of the first classes held in February 2008.
Our aim is to provide quality professional actor training to young people and adults. The basis of the work is Naturalism, stemming from the teachings of Stanislavski, through Michael Chekhov and Strasberg. Because Neale continues to work in the profession, the teaching is closely alligned to contemporary practise. What we do in the classes is very much what is happening in the rehearsal rooms around the country.
Regular Advanced Acting Classes are for young people and adults who are keen to pursue an acting career or achieve their acting potential. Weekly classes at the Academy provide quality training in acting for ages 16 years and above, including adults. The focus is on the development of techniques and skills, including healthy and effective voice use, movement, improvisation, tuition in the analysis of texts and the preparation of a piece of work for performance. The classes develop confidence and an understanding of the skills necessary to entering the profession, developing talents and abilities in a fun and friendly environment.
We have three different age groups, (16+ and Adults) allowing students to grow at a suitable pace, ensuring that the demands of each class are challenging but not overwhelming. Our new starts class is designed to introduce students to the techniques and approach allowing them to join more experienced students in the regular classes.
Professional Acting Coach is available to professional actors and non-professionals. Neale is a highly experienced practitioner and has taught professional and student actors on a one to one basis for 30 years. These are bespoke sessions tailored around the individuals needs, whether it be for an audition, performance or general improvement.
LAMDA classes are available on a one to one basis allowing students to prepare for external examinations.
Arts Award classes are held in group sessions or in private tutorials, offering additional opportunities for students to extend their knowledge of the arts generally and gain national qualifications. Neale is an Arts Award advisor and holds classes at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.
